This winter I've been pondering all the ways we have divorced ourselves from nature. In so many different systems of our life we are living unnaturally. Sitting in traffic, eating processed food, exploiting animals and looking at our Mother Earth as something to be conquered and used. Even the idea of owning land is weird to me now. I think we collectively feel that something isn't right and that our current systems aren't serving us.
First thing's first. We have to reconnect with our body. The body holds the memory and especially for women, it's imperative that we connect with the seasons of our womb. We have been conditioned to hide our pain and pretend everything is "normal" but what we're really doing is hurting ourselves, suppressing our innate natural power and stuffing ourselves into a life that doesn't honor us.
Plan your ENTIRE life around the cycle of the moon.
Plan physical and mental activities around your cycle
Plan your meals around your cyclical cravings (warm foods during period, cold foods during ovulation etc)
Plan for important conversations when you know you're calm and collected
Plan for needing help with chores around the house when you're feeling weak
Use your follicular phase to get shit done
Use your luteal phase for softer activities like reading, sketching, and rewatching Avatar the Last Airbender for the 7th time
PLAN for rest so you can do it without the internal productivity shaming (another side effect of our unnatural society)
Notice your seasons in tandem with the Earth's seasons.
Screw the new year being January 1st. I don't know about you but January and February are the hardest months of the year. I'm freaking tired, y'all! But why are we so tired when its supposed to be the beginning of the new year??
Maybe its because its really the end of the year and we haven't rested yet! Think about it. Why would the new year be in the middle of the winter??
I think New Year's Day is really the First Day of Spring. I think we need to stop with the New Year's Resolution crap in the middle of the winter and honor REST. This is the time we should be recharging our battery, hibernating, reading, learning and nesting. NOT internally shaming ourselves for not following through with some 30 day challenge we found online. No wonder they say that 80% of people drop off of their new year's resolutions after 2 weeks. We're fighting nature again when we know that's not a good idea.
Perhaps something we can do to live WITH rather than AGAINST the rhythms of nature is committing to therapy in the the deepest darkest months. Perhaps we can commit to ourselves to getting massages, cozy beverages, and doing soft, restorative exercises. Perhaps we can honor the rhythms of this beautiful planet we are living on and deepen our connection through introspection and self-love.
All my love,
Cynthia
