Design is a creative art. Love, passion and heart flows out of me into these designs. I close my eyes and visualized myself taking a walk on the land. What do I want to see? What sort of tasty treat can I easily grab as I meander through the forest? What smells will waft my way in the breeze? And then pencil meets paper.
Designing for a living, breathing Earth can have its challenges and it's important to be flexible should you plan for a tree but a boulder has says, "not here". Or perhaps you envisioned a prairie here but the land demands a thicket. With so much love for the planet flowing through me, I have no issue yielding to the forces of nature greater than myself.
...Working with people is a different story...
Mostly people are kind, open and trust my creative flow implicitly. But just as there must be balance in an ecosystem, so too are there people who keep their hands clenched into a fist and impose their will on those around them.
Some people think they can throw money at a forest and make it yield to them. Some people think they can throw money at time and make nature rush for them. Others strip you of your creative flow and disregard your thoughtfulness because they don't understand that we are in partnership with the land.
Many people are afraid. Afraid that our current systems will fail and they'll be on their own. They want to grow their own food so they don't have to be dependent on others.
I hear that. But I challenge this way of thinking.
The point of Abundance is that you have enough to share.
Wealth is not measured by how much you have, but how much you give away.
When designing for people who are afraid of sharing any of their fruit, or only care about creating a YouTube channel, or don't really live the ways of the Permaculture Ethics (Earth Care, People Care, Fair Share), we as designers have to check our Ego and trust that just because someone isn't on our level of understanding or commitment, doesn't mean they deserve less care and heart.
The love I have for this planet is abundant whether it's appreciated or not.
Every design, no matter how small or big, affects us all over the planet. Just as someone who pollutes the air and water somewhere across the world affects us, what we do here affects them.
When the ego gets hurt, it's natural response is to resent or retaliate.
The key is stay grounded in the cause: doing Good for the sake of doing Good.
Healing the planet, healing the people, healing thyself.
In gratitude and blessings,
Cynthia
